My Journey into Vegetarianism

Being actively Catholic to my parents meant having a lot of kids. Because of that, by the time they had me they were considered pretty old to be parents. However, since my parents had grown up on farms, they did the kind of things that farmers might do in order to save money. We had a garden filled with corn, asparagus, tomatoes, raspberries, cucumber, squash, and even usually some collard greens. My mother made fresh bread from scratch nearly every week. I don't think I had store-bought bread until I was in grade school.  We had an apple tree that my siblings and I would climb and 'steal' apples from. I say 'steal', but my parents intended us to eat them, although my mother would occasionally use them to make pies and applesauce. We had grape vines that made terrible tasting grapes, but we ate them anyway.
